In the Bamana language, bogo means earth or mud, lan means by means of, and fini means cloth. Each one carries the intricate hand drawn patterns and earthy tones that make Bogolan so distinctive, and slight variations are part of its handmade character. The cloth is hand spun and hand woven from local cotton on narrow strip looms, then sewn together, sun dried and decorated by hand with
